Moka Pot is also an Italian invention. In 1933, Alfonso Bialetti developed a stovetop coffee brewing equipment, similar to a teapot, based on the principle that boiling water passes through the coffee in the filter with the effect of pressure. ​Moka Pot consists of 3 compartments: The bottom chamber (water tank), funnel (coffee basket) and the upper chamber.

Although it is not correct to compare it with an espresso machine, the Moka Pot, which you can taste close to espresso, produces approximately 1.5-2 bar pressure (Espresso machine works with at least 9 bars) and allows you to make Espresso-like coffee successfully.

A must for brewing a great coffee is, without doubt, having a good coffee bean that roasted and finely ground to suit your taste.

You might have heard this everywhere and it is also necessary to do so. Just before brewing, with a burr grinder, grind 22 g of coffee (for 6 people) slightly coarser than you would do for espresso machine. (Slightly larger than granulated sugar)

If it is too coarse or too fine, there will be differences in taste and aroma. So grinding at the correct coarseness (or fineness) is vital to match ideal taste.

Fill the water tank (bottom chamber) of Moka Pot with water at a temperature of 80-85 °C until it is level with the valve. Fill the funnel with ground coffee, shake it gently so that the coffee surface is flat, do not tamp the grounds. Place the upper chamber (leave the top lid open) and place it on the smallest stove on low heat. (in order to avoid subjecting handle to heat)

As the water in the bottom chamber approaches a boil, the pressure will push a stream of coffee into the upper chamber. Remove the Moka Pot from the stove when it starts bubbling & first splutter. The brewing process will take approximately 1.30 minutes. 

You should quickly pour your coffee into the cup before it gets bitter.

Water Temperature

If you fill bottom chamber with cold water, you will get darker coffee. Preheating water to 80-85 °C is ideal for brewing. 

Also try to use filtered water in bottom chamber. Tap water drastically changes the taste of coffee. 

Cleaning Moka Pot

No matter original Bialetti or not, it is not recommended to wash the Aluminum Moka Pot in the dishwasher or with detergent.


Clean all parts thoroughly with water before the coffee dries and let it dry.

Roasting Level

It is not recommended to use dark roasted coffee in your Italian coffee maker.
